When purchasing industrial fans, many buyers focus only on airflow and pressure while overlooking the IP rating—a parameter that often determines whether a fan can operate safely in a given environment.

What Is an IP Rating?

IP stands for Ingress Protection, consisting of two digits:

• First digit (0–6): Protection against solid objects, ranging from finger contact prevention to complete dust tightness

• Second digit (0–9): Protection against water, from no protection to resistance against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets

For example, IP55 means “dust protected (limited ingress) + protected against water jets,” while IP68 means “completely dust tight + protected against long-term immersion.”

Three Key Considerations

1. IP Rating ≠ Corrosion Resistance

IP only protects the motor from ingress of foreign objects and water—it does not prevent chemical corrosion. In coastal or chemical plant environments, housing material matters equally: stainless steel (SUS304/316) or fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) is essential for corrosion protection.

2. The Real Challenge of Dusty Environments

In cement plants, flour mills, and mines, fine dust particles infiltrate motor bearings, accelerating wear and potentially causing short circuits. We recommend a minimum of IP55, combined with regular intake cleaning and bearing lubrication maintenance.

3. High-Temperature Environments Require a Holistic Approach

For boiler rooms and kiln exhaust applications, fans must withstand both hot gases and appropriate motor insulation. Class F insulation (up to 155°C) or Class H insulation (up to 180°C) is standard for high-temperature duty—the IP rating is only one dimension of the solution.
